Desert Knowledge Australia

Remote areas of Australia are often disconnected. With great distances between communities and the high cost of installation and maintenance, many areas are not serviced with basic infrastructure.

Connecting Desert People

Exploring the challenges and opportunities that affect desert and remote Australia is the job of Desert Knowledge Australia (DKA). With a vision of harmony, sustainability and prosperity for all Australian desert people – both Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal – DKA is creating partnerships and fostering knowledge of the desert to make a real difference to the people in outback Australia.

Striking up a partnership with DKA in 2010, Arup has assisted the organisation with know-how and innovation as part of its Desert Leadership Program.

For Arup employees it is a great opportunity to understand desert communities and connect them to the rest of Australia.

Cross Cultural Communications

The program aims to create bridges between all communities – Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal. Sharing a common language of understanding through leadership, ethics, values with an action-based approach, the program gives these communities a sense of purpose and belonging.

In working with DKA, Arup is making a difference to people’s lives in these remote communities. We’re helping them develop the necessary skills and capabilities to connect and operate cohesively. More importantly, as skills that can be handed down to the next generation, the program works to build a sustainable way of life in outback communities.
