About Arup

Partnering to leave a lasting legacy

At arupcommunity.org we aim to drive change through doing and giving. We partner with humanitarian and charitable foundations to help communities around the world which suffer from major challenges facing humanity, like natural disasters, poverty, poor health and sanitation and lack of access to fresh water, housing or education.

Through this site we share our experiences and hope that by telling our stories we can all learn and work together to positively affect our world now and for the future.

Arupcommunity.org was established to share stories of those involved in Arup’s Community Engagement activities. Our people are very honoured to participate in this area and our active engagement with humanitarian and charitable causes is a defining feature of Arup as a firm.

Each year, we aim to donate a minimum of 1%  of our profits directly to charitable causes, we also contribute staff time through corporate volunteering and pro-bono project assistance. Wherever possible, we try to combine money and time to bring about the greatest impact.

“I hope through sharing our stories we will encourage others to see that everyone can make a difference in whatever way they choose to contribute, be it through money, time or sharing of their professional experience in a way that benefits others. I hope this site helps others to imagine how they too can mobilize their resources and actively engage with the community.”
- Peter Bowtell, Buildings Practice Leader Australasia Region, Australasian Community Engagement Board Representative

About Arup

Founded in 1946 with an initial focus on structural engineering, Arup first came to the world’s attention with the structural design of the Sydney Opera House, followed by its work on the Centre Pompidou in Paris. Arup has since grown into a truly multidisciplinary organisation. Most recently, its work for the 2008 Olympics in Beijing has reaffirmed its reputation for delivering innovative and sustainable designs that reinvent the built environment.

Arup brings together broad-minded individuals from a wide range of disciplines and encourages them to look beyond the constraints of their own specialisms.

This unconventional approach to design springs in part from Arup’s ownership structure. The firm is owned in trust on behalf of its staff. The result is an independence of spirit that is reflected in the firm’s work, and in its dedicated pursuit of technical excellence.

Arup in Australasia

Arup established a presence in Australasia in 1963 and has since been active in the region for more than 40 years, opening its first Singapore office in 1968. It now employs over 1,700 staff working from eight offices across Australia, Singapore and New Zealand and has developed a diverse practice through delivering a wide range of projects for public and private sector clients.

The experienced staff of Arup combine technical excellence and an understanding of local clients and markets with genuine enthusiasm for design and innovation. Arup encourages its people to strive for quality, have a willingness to think creatively and to find better solutions for our clients. Clients also benefit from our ability to draw on the firm’s global multidisciplinary service offering to form the best possible project teams to meet their business needs.

Committed to sustainability, we are acutely aware of the responsibility we have in designing and positively influencing the built environment and strive to do the best possible work for current and future generations. Together, we shape a better world.

The Arup Community Engagement logo comes from the book Doodles and Doggerel a collection of verse and illustrations created by the Arup founder, Sir Ove Arup. The book was privately published by Ove Arup Partnership in his memory in 1989.

Sir Ove Arup

Sir Ove Arup, philosopher and engineer, made an enormous impact during his long and fruitful life on the attitudes of those concerned with the design of the built environment.

Ove strongly believed in the multi-disciplinary nature of design in engineering and architecture, and pioneered an holistic approach to projects throughout his career.

A formidable perfectionist, warm, self-deprecating, scrupulously – sometimes brutally – honest, Ove’s ability to inspire was remarkable. He commanded great loyalty and affection from those who worked with him.

“His amiable appearance, that kindly stooping stance, that wide gentle smile, his immediate and generous interest in everything and everybody, disarmed all those who met or worked with him” From Sir Hugh Casson’s foreword to Doodles and Doggerel
