Wearing Red for RedR 2013

On the 8th February, Arup around the globe turned red in support of Wear Red for RedR Day. Here in Australasia all of our offices, including Singapore for the first time, put on fantastic events to raise awareness and funds for this great organisation. The result was an amazing $2050 raised which will go towards supporting RedR to run their various training and deployment programs.

For those who don’t know, RedR (Registered Engineers for Disaster Relief) provides emergency assistance to communities devastated by conflict or major natural disasters by selecting, training and providing competent and committed personnel to humanitarian relief programs worldwide. Arup has been a major supporter of RedR for many years, with our staff participating in fundraising, training courses as well as volunteering in the field. For more information visit www.redr.org.au

Here’s a quick wrap up of this year’s events

Perth – The Perth office ran a morning tea with staff dressing up in their finest red attire to raise a huge $180

Melbourne – The Melbourne office dressed up in red with staff invited to contribute through a gold coin donation.  The day was a great success raising a total of $362, a fantastic result.

Brisbane – The Brisbane Community Partnering Committee hosted what was considered to be their most successful fund raising morning tea in many years! Staff were treated to a decadent ‘red’ morning tea (including red cordial, cherry ripes, kit-kats and jaffas of course!), and watched some short films provided by RedR explaining the fantastic work that they do and how staff can be involved.    Staff were also invited to part-take in the REDRAFFLE, with the chance to win some generously donated prizes from Edible Blooms, Mecca Bah, Poppy’s Cupcakes (Red Velvet of course!), and some Valentines Day gift packs of wine and chocolate.   As well as  raising awareness, Brisbane also raised $572.10, an amazing result.

Sydney – The Sydney team put on a delicious morning tea for staff, and raised a fantastic $240 for RedR.

Singapore – Red is an auspicious colour for the Chinese because it symbolises good fortune and joy. Red is found almost everywhere during Chinese New Year from home decor, gifts to street lighting.  This year, it’s timely that RedR day coincides with the Chinese New Year in Singapore.

To usher in the festivities and to support the good cause, the Singapore office staff were encouraged to dress in a red item for that day. This could be anything from an entire outfit, shoes, suspenders, bags, or even an umbrella! In the spirit of merriment, staff were also encouraged to donate a cold coin for the RedR cause of disaster relief.  We also had a roving photographer to capture our team spirit and our staff decked out looking really REDiant! These photos were subsequently shared with everyone.

With much generosity, the Singapore office raised a total of $565!

Adelaide – The Adelaide office turned red for the day, with staff putting up their hands to bake for what was a delicious  mornign tea.  We also heard about some of the great work RedR does, and how staff can get involved.  Altogether, the Adelaide team raised $76 in support of RedR.

North Queensland – The North Queensland offices put on a great morning team, with red food to match the red shirts of those who came along.  The delicious morning raised a great $53 for the cause.
