Project Overview

  • Arup helped to deliver a new fully equipped palliative care space at the hospice.
  • The 25m2 single storey extension provides an additional bedroom to allow parents of children in palliative care to stay with their child throughout the night.

A team from our Dublin office has helped deliver a bespoke extension for the LauraLynn Children’s Hospice.  Working in partnership with Gilligan Architects and Kiernan Homes, we provided civil, structural, mechanical and electrical engineering consultancy services for the project which saw the creation of a new space where parents of children needing palliative care could stay overnight with their child.

The new space comes fully medically equipped and gives more flexibility for parents, when previously they could only sleep in a chair or on the floor beside the bed of their child at the hospice

The structure was designed and constructed with solid masonry block double leaf walls, sitting on a reinforced concrete strip footing, supporting a combined timber and steel roof above. The mechanical and electrical packages included a number of specialist healthcare fittings including medical gases, underfloor heating and a moveable chair hoist for children with reduced mobility.

The room is now fit for purpose and is much appreciated by both the staff and the end users of the facility. While this project is now complete, Arup continues to support LauraLynn in their fundraising efforts.

"When a child is very sick, all a parent wants to do is hold them close while they get the specialist care they need.   Arup has helped to make this possible for families staying in LauraLynn. Now, when being beside their child round the clock is vital, families can stay in our beautiful, comfortable and spacious suite, safe in the knowledge that their child is receiving expert care from our team. I can’t tell you how much this means to them. On behalf of everyone at LauraLynn, thank you so much Arup for your contribution in making this possible, particularly for carrying out, free of charge, all the engineering work on the build of this very special addition to our facility."

Claire Shiels (LauraLynn)
"It is a great pleasure for Arup to work so closely with such an amazing organisation as LauraLynn. One of the core priorities of the firm is to do socially useful work and to join hands with others fighting for the same values. In the words of our founder, Ove Arup …our lives are inextricably mixed up with those of our fellow human beings, and there can be no real happiness in isolation…”
