On 23 October, Arup staff from the Hong Kong office formed teams to represent Arup in 'Challenging 12 Hours', a charity hiking event held annually by our strategic partner, Sowers Action, to raise funds for education in rural China.
Challengers could choose to hike for 12km, 26km or 42km. Those choosing 42km started at Yau Tong Sam Ka Tsuen Recreation Ground while 12km and 26km challengers departed from Shing Mun Reservoir Main Dam and Tsz Wan Shan Road respectively. All challengers aimed to reach Hong Kong Teachers Association Lee Heng Kwei Secondary School in 12 hours.
With high humidity and slippery slopes resulting from No.8 Typhoon Haima right before the event, even experienced hikers faced both physical and mental challenges. Apart from the tough parts, challengers enjoyed happy moments as well, such as monkey robbers en route, the beautiful views at the Shing Mun Reservoir, sharing fish balls and selfie taking. The hiking was well prepared and supported by the event host, with sufficient supplies of snacks, sandwiches, fruit and, most importantly, water.
We are proud to have one of our staff, Giuseppe Mollica who finished the race with an incredible record of 4 hours, 36 minutes and 10 seconds leaving a 50-minute gap with the runner-up and winning first place in the Men’s Open 42km. The time stands as the 42km challenge record.
With the help from challengers and donors, we have raised a total of HK$40,020 in this event.
