As a prelude to the World Water Day 2016, our strategic partner, A Drop of Life, organised Race for Water in mid-March and Walk for Water, an easier version of Race for Water on May 8.
In total 80 Arupians from the Hong Kong office participated in both charity events. In ‘Race for Water’, each participants carried 4.5L of bottled water to hike though mountains and valleys of Hong Kong, enjoyed the picturesque scenery while experiencing the hardship of peasants living in the remote parts of China who have to carry water back and forth between mountains and home every day. Similarly, participants carried 4.5L bottled water in ‘Walk for Water’ event. Instead of hiking, participants walked along the 3km long beach at Repulse Bay.
In addition to active participation from our colleagues, Arup was also the Diamond Sponsor for this good cause. Wilfred Lau, Chair of East Asia Community Engagement Committee, was invited to present our sponsorship during the opening ceremony. For environmental concerns, our Environmental & Venue Consulting team also provided pro-bono noise management consultancy service for the event.
Race for Water 2016 aims to raise public awareness of water stress conditions in arid regions in China as well as raising fund for the ‘Water Cellar Campaign’ to build rain water cellars that provide clean accessible water and hence alleviate the water resources shortage there.
